Yesterday Emily and I installed one part of Project Transplant. Our good friend Jeff caught the whole thing on video and made this amazing clip.

Getting our hands dirty

August 11, 2010

Team Emily is hard at work in Toronto today! We are cutting and soaking and beating and pulling and couching and pressing and packaging the enormous amount of hand pressed flax, hemp and abaca paper that this project will require.

Meanwhile, Team Emily’s Ottawa Branch affiliates are braving the wilderness to collect the bare bones of this project, the sticks. Everything is moving along nicely.

Saturday morning we will be installing right here, 2 Daly Avenue, on the lawn of Ottawa’s Arts Court. If you are in the neighborhood feel free to pop by for a chat! The official opening party will happen the following Saturday, August 21st from 2-5 pm. Hope to see you there!

So it begins

August 8, 2010

Now that we have a location secured we have begun to put the pieces together.

Small house…

Beginnings of first page/archway in underway….

More to come….

We have a spot

August 8, 2010

We have been offered multiple spots!  Debating between then was tough but we have finally decided….

(drumroll) Ottawa’s own Arts Court!

And so, starting on August 14th 2010, we will be installing Transplant in the front of The Arts Court. Look for us on the corner of Daly Avenue and Nicholas Street in downtown Ottawa!

Promo Vid

August 5, 2010

Emily and Emily are getting excited about this! Sadly we still don’t have an official location but we do have an official promotional video! How cute is that?

Still searching

July 28, 2010

So my Mum left a note and I left a voice mail message but if we haven’t heard from our first choice’s empty lot owners soon we may need to move on to some of the others.  So if anyone has an unused lot suggestion that comes complete with permission that would be ideal. We’d like to get things in the ground soon so there there is still some time for things to grow and live before the frost.

Transplant 2010

July 27, 2010

“Let not the world’s deceitful cares
the rising plant destroy;
But let it yield a hundredfold
the fruits of peace and joy.”

- Rev.John Cawood, 1815

This summer, Emily Comeau (a fibre artist from Quebec) and Emily Cook (a book and paper artist from Ontario) will be collaborating to create an immense and interactive tunnel book made from local plant materials to install in a barren patch of city.

The “book” will be 10 feet high and 12 feet long and contain 6 “pages” featuring a cut paper story of urbanism in archway shapes that people can walk through and interact with. The structure will be made of live willow branches and the paper pages made of flax paper infused with seeds. As the elements erode the paper, the sculpture will disintegrate and the seeded paper will sprout. This way the sculpture will have a changing life and meaning as the urban world we create with the cut paper will be eroded and changed by the living materials.

Emily Comeau is a recent graduate of Concordia University, majoring in Fibre Arts and was awarded the Prix Diagonale for her artistic achievements. Her art practice is largely fibre based. She has participated in numerous exhibitions and events in Ontario and Quebec. More information about her and her art practice can be found at her website.

Emily Cook holds a BFA in printmaking from Ontario College of Art and Design and an MFA from Louisiana State University. She is now practicing in Toronto . She makes paper based sculptures and books, and sometimes teaches at the Ontario College of Art and Design. She has won numerous awards and shown in both the US and Canada. You can see some of her work at her website.
